What I’m up to – Random Readings

I do a lot of research. Some of it is accidental and some of it is deliberate. There are a lot of things that stoke my interest, give me ideas, and just tickle my funny bone. I’m a lot more informed now than I used to be, which isn’t saying much given how much information is out there. But since I like to share interesting things, I thought I’d share some of the news stories I’ve been following the past week.

OMG! I missed Cap Locks Day! How did that happen? And when did Cap Locks Day become a thing? Hang on. I’m confused now.

Wait. Disney Princesses go to Harrods. Really? Wow. Some of these outfits are actually cool.

Living paycheck to paycheck isn’t easy. I’ve done it with literally .32 cents to my name for 2 weeks at a time. Here are some interesting tips.

Apparently there are businesses you can start for under $1000, and I do two of them.

Let us not forget how volcano eruptions happen, because that might save our lives (or give us plot bunnies) at a future date.

Oh, and according to a CNBC reporter, Google is about to vanish off the face of the internet map.

We’ll not rehash all of the U.S. political stories (because there are just too many of them to even figure out which ones are better). Well, okay, I’ll share this one. CNN’s “Change the List” project which is trying to get Hawaiians out to vote. I rather like the idea of letting them vote a day ahead of the rest of the country. They should have a chance to participate in our official election process.

Oh, and Frankenstorm is about to hit the U.S. (I like that nickname, but I’m sure NOAA will change it shortly).

BTW, the new PBS show I said I liked the other week is actually “Call the Midwife,” not “Call Me a Midwife.” It’s shaping up to be a really good show and I found out the other day it’s based off the diaries of a real-life post WWII district nurse. I found it fun to watch Jenny get grossed out when she visited a poor man with roaches and maggots in his apartment. It’s a lesson about poverty that so few people actually experience. As someone who lived in middle-class poverty as a child, let me tell you that true poverty isn’t about not owning a t.v. or having phone service. It’s much, much worse than that and I thank my parents and my lucky stars that I had a roof over my head and something to eat, even if it was leftovers half the time.

There’s worse that could happen to a person (especially a child) than middle-class poverty.

But, back to my nonsensical, fun-filled discussions. I have tweeted links to bras found in a castle drawer that date back to the 1300s (or 1400s), to a planet with 4 suns, and the discovery of a new dinosaur species. My interests seem to be all over the map and now it’s got me wondering.

What sorts of things do you read? What stories do you follow? Which headlines grab your attention.

I’m curious. I can’t be the only person out there devouring weird news items.
