Pick-a-little, Talk-a-little

(Title refers to my favorite song from all the theatre I’ve actually performed in). @=)

So I flip on the T&V and what do I see? Chatroulette on CNN. Warning to all parents, apparently there is X-rated material on there (not everyone engages, but some people do). So this 17-year-old Russian invented the site to randomly chat with his friends. He doesn’t pick who to talk to, he just logs in and is randomly connected with someone else. He’s also made it available to the general public. You can choose to chat with the person you’re connected to or click “Next” to talk to someone else.

Anyone else see a scene from “Logan’s Run” (the movie) in this technology? Most tech breakthroughs come from Star Trek and Star Wars fans. While I don’t like that some people are using this tech for X-Rated conversations–they should really build their own site for adults only instead of putting it on the site that kids and non-interested adults are on–it’s nice to see technology from other science-fiction work being developed. BTW, I haven’t read the book, so don’t know if the scene is movie-only or if it was in the book.

Changing subjects: Sandra McDonald. She’s in my local writers group and therefore, I feel the need to say “Yay, Sandra!” I found her paperbacks in a Victorian bookstore last week and took a picture. Here’s the cropped version.

BTW, when I say Victorian, I mean a bookstore in Victoria B.C. called Munroe’s Bookstore. I was visiting Canada last week and the week before for the Olympics and other vacation fun. Nice to see names in print that I actually know.

Saw at least 5 Olympic records broken (possibly 6, I lost count) when I was there, same event session, three different records. Saw Apolo Anton Ohno win Silver by the slimmest of margins. If the Korean world champ hadn’t slipped and taken out one of his own teammates when he tried to pass in the final lap, neither American would have made it into the top three.

Just goes to show that even when you put serious effort into something, that chance plays a part in both success and failure. Pretty much sums up my writing career. Finding the right opportunities at the right time because of someplace else I’ve been or someone else I’ve known. Now that’s not to say life is all about chance, because it’s not. If I hadn’t worked hard on my first novel, I wouldn’t have published my first short story. But would-be writers should always be aware that even the smallest moment can make or break your careers. More on that later.
