Writing Prompt Wednesdays – Watercooler Chat

Ready for another writing prompt?

The latest trend at my workplace is Latin coffee, pressed and brewed in a very small pot, then served in shot glasses with foam on top. It seems like everyone who drinks coffee is on this particular band wagon and you can tell the time of day by when they gather in the break room. Which brings me to today’s prompt.

Da Prompt: Your hero(s) and villain(s) are taking a break from the story you’re writing and have gathered round the watercooler. Maybe they’re drinking coffee or grabbing a soda and chips from the vending machine. You get to decide their mood, how they interact with each other when they are “off set” (meaning not engaged in the story), and what they do.

Da Extra Credit: Use the below 3 words and cover the following:

Do they like their roles in the story? Do they appreciate the opportunities you’ve given them? Are they having issues with the things they have to do? (If so, have they talk out their problems).

Da Words: Pizza, Plaza, octopus

Da Wordcount: 1500+ (flexible)

Have fun!

Writers are frequently asked the question “Where do you get your ideas?” The question is a hard one to answer because we all find our inspiration in different places. Some people need to be given prompts, little snippets of ideas to spark their imaginations.

With that in mind, I am posting Writing Prompt Wednesdays. The goal is to inspire writers with exercises meant to train their skills and fire up the creative juices. There are rules. Most prompts will have associated word counts or style instructions. These are not meant to restrict the writer, but give the writer a chance to explore different ways of writing.

If you are an author in search of that one juicy idea, I hope these posts help. If you have ideas for writing prompts, please let me know.

Da Rules:

1) Anything goes so long as you stick to the spirit of the prompt.

2) I ask that if you do publish something based on one of my prompts, that you post the good news (and the link) in the comments of the prompt that inspired your success. You want other people to help you celebrate, right?
