Jay Lake’s Cancer Fundraiser

Author Jay Lake is having a nasty time getting over cancer. All treatments have come up bust and he’s running out of options. A fundraiser has been started on his behalf to help him get genome sequencing, which has proven helpful in a number of cancer cases, and authors everywhere have been contributing and promising rewards to those who contribute. The rewards are called “Acts of Whimsy”.

So I’ve sent in my donation, and I’m planning my own little act of whimsy. I will be dressing up as a character from a Japanese Transformers cartoon series (Mega). The picture of this character is here (http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Mega).

I actually do have this costume and let me tell you that whole fabric hanging off the tip of her hat thing? Completely ridiculous. The amount of fabric that bit takes is so heavy it pulls the hat off one’s head. I had to sew the wig to the stupid thing, then pin the whole thing to my head so it would stay on. Then I had to adjust my walk and keep my head in a certain position to make sure it would stay on (it didn’t want to).

Anyway, I intend to get pics or video of me doing something ridiculous in this costume. Maybe I’ll pull out my high school band rifle (it’s wooden) and do a few twirls and such. That could be fun. Assuming I can find the silly thing.

If you have thoughts on what ridiculous thing you’d like to see me do, please comment. I’m welcoming suggestions.

  1. You’re welcome. @=)

I’ve just written a little fight song for the whole thing too. Assuming I find a decent camera (other than my phone), this is going to be quite epic (in a silly way).
