Blog: Rainforest Picture of the Day

I would have made this post Thursday, but internet access at the Rainforest Writers Retreat was spotty and I could not get online when I wanted to post this.

I made a pretty good start on Wednesday night and Thursday, totaling over 10,000 words. Round about lunchtime, though, a nascent migraine made itself known. Once a migraine becomes full blown, it’s impossible to get rid of and I spend about 2 weeks in debilitating pain. It was sunny, I was surrounded by rainforest that I hadn’t yet had a chance to explore, and I had a migraine to get rid of if I didn’t want to spend the rest of the weekend in bed, moaning in pain.

Did I mention that I was surrounded by rainforest, and that I love to hike?

So I grabbed a piece of deadfall to keep the spider webs out of my face, and set off on the three falls hike. I should note that this isn’t an official hiking trail name. It’s what I named the network of trails I needed to take to see the Gatton Creek, Cascade, and Falls Creek waterfalls. To get from the Rain Forest Village Resort to all three falls and back to the resort is a hike of about 4.5 to 9 miles depending on which trails you take and if you cheat by taking the road back instead of the trails (which I did).

Lessons Learned: Rainforests are wet, even on dry days. Wear your rainboots when you hike because the hiking trails can turn into stream beds when you least expect it, and your feet will get soaked.

Effect: Sore knee, migraine gone, 4.5 miles hiked.
Net Result: Well worth it. I can deal with a sore knee much easier than the migraine.

Picture of the day: Cascade Falls (it’s bigger than it looks in the picture).
