Whether you are a technical writer or a fiction writer, proofreading other people’s work can teach you a lot.
Sometimes you will see good examples of writing that you will want to emulate. Other times, you’ll recognize your own common mistakes in the work you’re proofing (mirrors are good at reflecting). If you pay attention while editing and proofing, you can pick up new techniques and see communication methods you’ve never known about. Not to mention all the cool information you learn.
And, if you need another excuse, proofing others work provides great networking opportunities.
Just remember the proper rules for critiquing: Offer positive reinforcement, give the reasons why you’re correcting the work, and make solid suggestions for alternatives instead of just saying “It’s horrible.”
