Financial Planning R Us

The U.S. Government has launched a new website called MyMoney.gov.

At first blush, it looks very interesting. It’s mainly tools and resources to help people budget for their current financial situation and for life events (like home buying, college, etc.). The site contains all sorts of nifty calculators, links, and topic threads. Scams is a good one. Federal government contact information is another.

If people actually use the site, I can see it being very useful for getting them back on their feet. The only concern I have is that people aren’t generally honest enough with themselves when it comes to tracking every single penny they’ve spent or how much they’re really making. Usually we all forget to include that subway fare or coffee grabbed at the Qwiki Mart in our total budget for the week, thinking only the big expenses count. Or we count what we want to be earning before taxes and other paycheck deductions.

Still, the site is relatively user friendly for now and easy to read. I highly recommend it for anyone with financial concerns or questions. Even if you just want to track the latest scam, this is a good place to go first. If it’s not listed, then check out Snopes.com.
